Why do I need a lactation consultant?
You don't have to wait until feeding feels impossible to get support. An IBCLC can help identify the cause of feeding challenges and create a plan that fits your family's goals.

What happens at a lactation visit?
Every visit is centered around your family's goals. We begin by listening to your story, then perform a comprehensive feeding assessment—not just a quick latch check.
Depending on your needs, your visit may include:
A health history for both parent and baby
A feeding observation and weighted feed
Assessment of latch, positioning, milk transfer, and pumping (if applicable)
Evaluation of your baby's oral function, body tension, reflexes, and feeding mechanics
Assessment of the lactating parent's breast anatomy, milk production, comfort, and feeding goals
Guidance and hands-on education tailored to your family
Before you leave, you may have simple oral motor games to practice at home to help strengthen your baby's feeding skills. If additional support would benefit your family, we may also collaborate with trusted providers—such as pediatricians, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, dentists, or ENT specialists—to ensure your baby receives comprehensive, coordinated care.
If your partner or another caregiver will be helping feed your baby, we encourage them to attend, too. Feeding isn't just about the baby—it's about supporting the whole family. Our goal is for everyone to leave feeling confident, informed, and equipped for the journey ahead.

Do the IBCLCs at GROW have training to support the tongue and lip tie release process?
Yes. Both of GROW's IBCLCs have completed advanced training in oral function and oral motor habilitation, allowing us to confidently support families before and after a tongue or lip tie release.
We assess feeding function, identify compensatory feeding patterns, prepare babies for a potential release, and guide families through the healing process afterward. This may include oral exercises, feeding strategies, bodywork recommendations, and collaboration with your release provider and other members of your baby's care team.
Our goal isn't simply to help your baby have a procedure—it's to help them develop the skills they need for more comfortable, effective feeding.

What can be done about low milk supply?
Low milk supply isn't a diagnosis—it's a symptom. The first step is understanding why your milk supply is low so we can create a plan that addresses the root cause.
At GROW, we perform a comprehensive assessment of both parent and baby. We evaluate milk removal, latch, pumping, infant oral function, feeding frequency, hormonal and medical history, breast anatomy, nutrition, and other factors that can impact milk production.
Your personalized plan may include:
Improving milk removal and feeding efficiency
Optimizing your pumping routine and flange fit
Addressing oral function challenges that limit milk transfer
Identifying nutritional or hormonal concerns
Collaborating with your healthcare provider for additional testing or treatment when appropriate
Our goal isn't just to increase the number of ounces you pump—it's to help you build a feeding plan that's realistic, sustainable, and aligned with your family's goals.

Do you support bottle-fed infants?
Absolutely. At GROW, we believe infant feeding support is for every family—not just those who breastfeed.
Our IBCLCs have advanced training in bottle feeding, bottle refusal, and infant feeding mechanics. We look beyond the bottle itself to understand why your baby may be struggling, whether that's related to oral function, feeding coordination, sensory preferences, positioning, or previous feeding experiences.
Our approach is respectful of your baby's personhood. We don't believe babies should be starved or pushed to the point of distress in an attempt to "teach" them to take a bottle. Instead, we use gentle, evidence-informed strategies that build trust, preserve your baby's relationship with feeding, and work with their unique temperament and developmental stage.
Whether you're preparing to return to work, introducing a bottle for the first time, navigating bottle refusal, or simply wanting to make feeds more comfortable and efficient, we're here to help your family reach your feeding goals—with compassion, collaboration, and respect for your baby every step of the way.

Can you help with reflux?
Yes. While we don't diagnose or treat medical conditions like GERD, we can help identify feeding factors that may be contributing to your baby's symptoms.
Our IBCLCs assess the entire feeding relationship, including latch, milk transfer, oral function, swallowing coordination, positioning, feeding pace, bottle mechanics, and maternal milk supply. We also evaluate the lactating parent for factors such as oversupply, forceful letdown, and gut health concerns that may contribute to infant feeding discomfort and reflux-like symptoms.
Because reflux is often multifactorial, we take a whole-family approach. Sometimes, small changes in feeding mechanics or addressing parent factors can make a meaningful difference in your baby's comfort. When appropriate, we also collaborate with your pediatrician and other providers to ensure your family receives comprehensive, coordinated care.
If your baby is frequently spitting up, arching during feeds, coughing, gagging, refusing to eat, or seeming uncomfortable while feeding, we'd love to help you uncover the "why" and create a plan that supports both feeding and comfort.
